–Environmental Impact & Circular Economy Research

Internship Period: August '25 - July '26 (online)
Overview : MIRI, built by NEEDS Inc. , is South Korea's easiest inventory management program, designed for small store owners and solo operators. It connects menu sales directly to ingredient usage, automatically deducting stock as items sell and calculating exactly how much to reorder based on remaining inventory and expected consumption.

Summary of the Internship

I successfully completed a one-year internship with NEEDS from August 2025 through July 2026, focusing on environmental impact measurement, food-waste reduction, carbon-emissions analysis, and circular-economy research related to the company’s inventory and automated ordering operations.

MIRI can even auto-place orders with connected distributors. Beyond inventory, it offers expiration alerts, daily stock-in tracking, top-selling menu insights, and sales comparisons across locations—making it ideal for restaurants, cafes, retail stores, shared kitchens, cafeterias, and franchise headquarters. With MIRI, business owners can stop manually tracking stock and let smart automation handle daily operations, saving time while reducing waste and loss.

 Scope of Internship

.

• Food-waste data validation and methodology development: Reviewed existing waste-reduction claims and data structures; helped design a reproducible measurement protocol; and supported validation using sample-store inventory and waste data.

• CO₂ reduction modeling and scenario analysis: Researched credible emissions factors, translated validated food-waste reductions into estimated CO₂ savings, and examined conservative and optimistic scenarios as the number of participating stores increased.

• Circular-economy and supply-chain analysis: Mapped waste hotspots across the distribution chain and examined how improved store-level ordering accuracy could reduce excess inventory, disposal, and overproduction beyond individual stores.

• Environmental impact reporting and communication: Contributed to phase reports, partnership-oriented impact materials, and the integrated “MIRI Environmental Impact Report,” with findings structured for internal review and potential use in investor and partner discussions.

My Role and Responsibilities, Achievements

During my internship at NEEDS (August 2025–July 2026), focused on environmental impact and circular-economy research tied to the company's inventory and automated ordering systems. My responsibilities included validating food-waste data and helping design a reproducible measurement methodology, modeling CO₂ reduction scenarios by translating waste savings into emissions estimates, and analyzing supply-chain waste hotspots to see how better store-level ordering could cut excess inventory and disposal. Also contributed to phase reports and the integrated "MIRI Environmental Impact Report," preparing findings for internal review and potential investor/partner discussions—following a staged process from data verification through impact reporting.

 Lessons Learned

  • Throughout the internship, I worked through a staged research process—data verification → carbon-impact modeling → circular-economy analysis → integrated impact reporting—with an emphasis on evidence-based analysis, transparent assumptions, and practical application to business and sustainability decision-making.
